Animal Welfare Fund

Animal Welfare Fund

One gift, spread across the animal welfare organizations that independent evaluation rates highest.

Farmed animal advocacy is a field where the difference between a good organization and an average one is very large, and where an individual donor has almost no way to tell them apart. The Animal Welfare Fund is the answer to that: your gift is pooled and split across organizations that have been through a detailed independent review rather than chosen on reputation.

How the split is decided

Allocations follow the current top charity recommendations published by Animal Charity Evaluators, which assesses organizations on programs, cost-effectiveness, room for more funding, track record, and leadership and culture. Because the fund follows the latest recommendations rather than a fixed list, the split changes as the evaluations do, and your gift does not need you to keep up.

What that buys in practice

Recommended organizations tend to work on complementary fronts, so a split gift covers several strategies at once: corporate campaigns that end cage confinement across an entire supply chain, research that tells advocates which tactics actually shift behaviour, work to make plant-based and cultivated alternatives competitive on taste and price, and the beginnings of a scientific field devoted to wild animal welfare.

Recent allocations have gone to organizations including The Humane League, Faunalytics, the Good Food Institute and Wild Animal Initiative. Each has its own page in our program directory.

Giving to the fund from Canada

Most animal advocacy organizations are registered outside Canada, so giving to them directly earns no Canadian tax credit. A gift to this fund through Rethink Charity Foundation, a registered Canadian charity, comes with an official Canadian donation receipt. Our tax credit calculator will estimate what that is worth in your province.

How this fund is granted

This fund follows Animal Charity Evaluators. We review its current recommendations quarterly and split the fund across the organizations ACE recommends at that point, rather than across a list we chose once and left alone. When ACE's recommendations change, the next allocation changes with them, so a standing monthly gift keeps tracking the research without you having to do anything.

Gifts are pooled and granted on that quarterly cycle. Batching keeps transfer and currency costs down, and it means a few months pass between your donation and the recipient organizations, which we track on Where Is My Donation?
