Reducing iodine deficiency with Iodine Global Network

Iodine deficiency during pregnancy and early childhood causes permanent cognitive impairment, and it is entirely preventable by adding a trace of iodine to table salt. Universal salt iodization is one of public health's genuine success stories, and the remaining work is unglamorous: getting the last countries to adopt it, and keeping the countries that already have it from quietly slipping.

The work is mostly persuasion and measurement rather than delivery. It means meeting government officials, briefing policy-makers on the science in terms that bear on their decisions, and assembling national coalitions that bring together health ministries, aid agencies, implementers and the salt industry itself, since no iodization program works without the producers.

Alongside that sits the monitoring: tracking iodization coverage and population iodine status country by country, maintaining the data the World Health Organization relies on, and acting as a link between iodine researchers and the global health community. The network doing this is the Iodine Global Network.

Iodizing salt is cheap and is paid for by industry once a country requires it. What is scarce is the sustained technical pressure that gets a national standard written, enforced and kept in place across changes of government. A small budget spent there moves a very large amount of salt, which is an unusual amount of leverage for a donation.
