Carbon removal solutions with Carbon180

Nearly every emissions pathway that keeps warming within reach of international targets assumes that large amounts of carbon dioxide get taken back out of the atmosphere later this century. The removal capacity those models assume does not currently exist at anything like the required scale, and comparatively little philanthropy goes toward building it.

The field spans a wide range of approaches, from land-based methods such as reforestation and agricultural practices that build soil carbon, through enhanced mineral weathering, to engineered pathways like direct air capture. They differ enormously in cost, permanence and how ready they are, and no single one will carry the load, so the useful thing is a portfolio rather than a favourite.

This program works on the conditions that let removal mature: federal policy development and advocacy, engagement with businesses, and support for innovators, currently focused on the United States, where much of the relevant research funding and procurement policy is set. It also publishes educational material and analysis on removal policy and science, in a field where most decision-makers are starting from very little. The organization is Carbon180.
