Global Health Fund

Choosing between a dozen well-run global health programs is hard, and the right answer moves as programs fill their funding gaps. The Global Health Fund exists so that you do not have to make that call every time you give. Gifts to the fund are pooled and directed to programs that have come through GiveWell's cost-effectiveness research, which is published in full and revised as new evidence arrives.

Most of the fund to date has gone to two malaria programs. The first pays for long-lasting insecticidal nets and for the distribution campaigns that get them into households, including the follow-up checks that confirm nets are hung and still in use years later. The second is seasonal malaria chemoprevention, a course of four monthly antimalarial doses given to children aged three to 59 months in the Sahel, timed to the rainy season when transmission peaks.

Neither is glamorous. Both are unusually well measured and cheap per case averted, which is why they keep ranking near the top of the evidence. The charities that implement them are the Against Malaria Foundation and Malaria Consortium.

Gifts to the fund are pooled and regranted on a quarterly cycle rather than sent on the day they arrive. Batching holds down transfer and currency costs, and it lets each allocation follow the most recent research instead of the calendar.
